Astigmatism is a vision problem that’s commonly misunderstood.  First of all it’s not a stigmatism as most people think, it’s “astigmatism”, and this should help you research the right information.

What’s Astigmatism?

Don’t think of it as a disease, astigmatism simply means your cornea is deformed requiring a correction.  Like the common nearsightedness and farsightedness, it’s a refractive error.

To understand astigmatism, it’s important to know that a normal cornea is round and shaped like a ball.  A person with astigmatism has a cornea that’s oval shaped or looks more like a football.  Light bends unequally on the cornea due to this odd shape causing blurriness and vision problems.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

Patients with astigmatism will experience eye straining and headaches especially after focusing on something for a while, like reading or working on a phone, iPad, or computer.  Most common symptom is a blurred or distorted vision at all distances, far or near.  If you squint a lot, this is also one of the common symptoms to pay attention to.

Types of Astigmatism

  • Myopic Astigmatism (vision error causing nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopic astigmatism (vision error causing farsightedness)
  • Mixed astigmatism (vision error mix of nearsightedness and farsightedness)

Astigmatism is also characterized in two categories, regular and irregular.  Regular astigmatism is very common in half of the adult population.  Irregular astigmatism is less common and happens due to eye disease like “keratoconus” which thins the layer of the cornea distorting the shape of it.  Another reason for irregular astigmatism is having an eye injury that also distorts the cornea shape.
