PRK POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTION SHEET
(After Hours Emergency phone number: 949-683-4758)

Using your eye drops: Start on the day of your procedure and continue until your contact lenses are removed
1. Antibiotic: 1 drop four times a day.
2. Steroid: 1 drop four times a day
3. Artificial Tears 1 drop four to six times a day or more frequently if your eyes feel dry.
4. Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drops: 1 drop twice a day (morning and night).

Ice packs can be used for 10-20 minutes for each hour you are awake for the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery.

Some eye drops may sting for up to two minutes or cause temporary blurred vision. Chilling all of your eye drops in your refrigerator may help make them less irritating.

How to use eye drops:
• Wash your hands before administration of eye drop medications.
• Do not touch the eye dropper, or let dropper touch your eye.
• Shake eye drops well before using.
• Tilt your head back, gazing upward and pull down on lower eyelid, making a pouch.
• Place dropper directly over eye and administer prescribed number of drops.
• Do not rinse the eye dropper.
• WAIT 1 minute between every eye drop administered.

Other Considerations:
Wear your protective eye shields (provided in your kit) starting the evening of your surgery until you wake up the next morning. These should be worn for a total of five nights to prevent accidental rubbing of your eyes or pressure while you sleep.

You may take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Tylenol or Tylenol PM. If you prefer, our staff would be pleased to call your pharmacy for a prescription-grade pain reliever.

• For the first 48-72 hrs it is normal for your eyes to be blurry and to feel tearing, burning and light sensitivity.
• It is recommended to rest and try to keep your eyes closed as much as possible.
• Do not remove your contact lenses. The doctor will remove them for you.
• Do not rub your eyes following surgery for the first week.
• If a contact lens falls out, DO NOT try to reinsert it. Continue the medications as directed and contact us.
• No strenuous physical activity while contact lens is in place.
• It is OK to shower, but try to avoid getting shower water in your eyes for two weeks following surgery.
• Try to stay away from smoke, dusty areas or chemical vapors for two weeks following PRK.
• Wear your sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection whenever you are outside.
• Do not drive or operate machinery/appliances until advised by the doctor after contact lens removal.
• Do not swim in pool, ocean, or use hot tubs, steam baths, or saunas for one month after surgery.
