What’s the LASIK Recovery Process Like?

Let’s face it. Clear vision is always something that people want and need. And if you’re tired of wearing contacts and eyeglasses all the time, the only real choice is LASIK. While doctors have treated over 30 million patients with LASIK worldwide, apprehension and fear prevent some from undergoing the procedure.

Any surgery is a bit nerve-racking, but when you learn that it’s safe and how the recovery process works, you can feel more comfortable moving ahead. Here’s all you need to know about the LASIK recovery

How Long Does the LASIK Recovery Process Take?

Unlike other types of surgeries, the recovery time for LASIK is at little as 12 hours! While you can’t get straight back into heavy exercise and contact sports, you won’t feel the ill effects the next day in some cases.

That said, for most people, the eyes are almost fully healed after 24 hours, although some patients may need between two and five days to fully recover. Compared to other types of surgery, however, this time frame is shockingly short.

Many patients at our Newport Beach Lasik practice experience 20/20 vision right after their procedure.

Light Discomfort

A few hours after the procedure, it’s normal to feel a bit of discomfort and redness in the eyes. The hard part about this stage of recovery is that you need to avoid scratching or itching your eyes.

If you can do that, you should be good to go! A great tip is to go home and take a nap for a few hours. This should help you avoid discomfort, and when you wake up, you’ll feel well-rested and ready to enjoy your new vision.

If you’re still feeling discomfort, use a medicated and lubricated eye drop to relieve your symptoms as directed by Dr. Chebil.

The First Few Days After LASIK

After LASIK, you’re going to want to avoid a few different activities. First off, you need someone to drive you home from the procedure, as it’s unsafe to drive at this point.

Next, you should avoid taking a shower for up to 24 hours. Getting water in the eye or rubbing it can cause you to tear the corneal flap, which puts you in quite a predicament and may necessitate a second procedure.

If you’re a gym rat, you need to curtail your activities for up to three to five days. Sweat can cause damage to the procedure, as well as incidental contact.

In roughly two to three days, you will probably have a follow-up appointment with Dr. Chebil to discuss any aftereffects. Hopefully, you’re feeling fine, and your vision is top-notch.  What patients love about our Newport Beach practice is the fact Dr. Alexandra Chebil is involved with each patient from the first visit to long after the procedure is done.  You’re not tossed around like a number.  You are our top priority.
