Six tips to Maintain Eye Health:
1. Eat for Good Vision
Start with a well-balanced diet to maintain healthy weight and avoid diabetes, which can lead to eye problems in adults.
Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E may help prevent age-related vision problems like cataracts and macular degeneration.
Regularly eat lots of the following foods:
Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards,
Fatty fish like tuna and salmon
Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources
2. Stop smoking. Maintain Eye Health
Smokers are more likely to develop cataracts, have optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration.
3. Wear 100% UV protection Sunglasses
UV exposure promotes the development of cataracts and macular degeneration. Your sunglasses do not need to be expensive to prevent UV damage. Most sunglasses have a 100% UV protection filter. Make sure the tag reads “100% UV protection”.
4. Wear safety glasses at work, and while playing sports
Contact sports like ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can lead to serious eye injury.
5. Rest your eyes during prolonged computer work to prevent eyestrain, dry eyes and blurry distance vision and maintain eye health
6. You should also:
Get regular eye exams. Make sure that your glasses and contact lens prescriptions are current. Consider lasik if your contacts irritate your eyes or if you have recurring infections. Lasik corrects for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Avoid glare from the computer by positioning your monitor so you look down towards the screen.
Use an anti-glare screen if needed.
If your eyes are dry, blink more or use lubricating eye drops.
Rest your eyes by looking up for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
