What LASIK eye surgery corrects

Glasses and contacts bend light so it lands on the retina. LASIK eye surgery makes that correction permanent by reshaping the cornea, the clear front of the eye.

Nearsightedness

Far away looks blurry, close up stays sharp. Also called myopia.

Farsightedness

Close objects are harder to focus on. Also called hyperopia.

Astigmatism

An uneven cornea blurs or distorts vision at every distance.

LASIK does not prevent the loss of reading vision that starts in your 40s. We will tell you at your evaluation how that affects your result.

How LASIK surgery works

At our Newport Beach office the whole procedure takes about 20 minutes. You stay awake, most patients feel pressure rather than pain, and both eyes are usually treated in the same visit.

  1. 1

    Numbing drops

Drops numb the eye. No needles, no general anesthesia.

  2. 2

    A thin flap

Dr. Chebil creates a thin flap on the cornea and folds it back.

  3. 3

    Laser reshaping

An excimer laser reshapes the cornea to your exact measurements.

  4. 4

    Flap back in place

The flap is laid back down and seals on its own. No stitches.

Are you a good candidate for LASIK?

Only an eye exam can tell. These are the things Dr. Chebil checks at your LASIK evaluation in Newport Beach.

Usually a good fit

  • 18 or older
  • Prescription stable for 12 months
  • Healthy corneas with enough thickness
  • No active eye infection or disease

May need another option

  • Thin or irregular corneas
  • Severe dry eye
  • Pregnant or nursing
  • A prescription that is still changing

Not a LASIK candidate? PRK corrects the same problems without a flap and often suits thinner corneas.

LASIK recovery with one surgeon at every step

At many high-volume LASIK centers you meet the surgeon only on surgery day. At our Newport Beach practice, Dr. Chebil sees you at every visit, from the first exam to your last check-up.

  1. Evaluation

    Measurements and a plan

A full eye exam, corneal mapping and a straight answer on whether LASIK suits you.

  2. Surgery day

    About 20 minutes

Someone drives you home. Some burning or tearing for a few hours is normal. Rest.

  3. Next day

    First check-up

Dr. Chebil checks your eyes. Most patients drive and go back to work.

  4. First weeks

    Protect the eye

Use your drops. No rubbing, swimming, hot tubs or eye makeup until cleared.

  5. First months

    Vision settles

Vision keeps sharpening. Dryness and night halos usually fade.

Side effects to know about

The most common are temporary dry eye and glare or halos at night. Less often, the eye is under- or over-corrected and may need a touch-up. Flap complications are rare. Dr. Chebil reviews your personal risk at the evaluation.

LASIK in Newport Beach: common questions

Does LASIK hurt?

Numbing drops mean most patients feel pressure, not pain. Some burning or scratchiness for a few hours afterwards is normal.

How long does the procedure take?

About 20 minutes for both eyes. Plan to spend longer at the office on surgery day for preparation and a short rest.

When can I go back to work?

Most patients return the day after surgery, once Dr. Chebil has checked their eyes at the next-day visit.

Is LASIK permanent?

The correction to your cornea is permanent. Your eyes still age, so you may need reading glasses later in life, as almost everyone does.

What are the risks?

The most common side effects are temporary dry eye and glare or halos at night. Under- or over-correction can happen and is sometimes treated with a touch-up. Serious complications are rare. Your personal risk is reviewed at the evaluation.

What is the difference between LASIK and PRK?

Both reshape the cornea with a laser. LASIK works under a thin flap and recovers faster. PRK treats the surface with no flap, takes longer to heal and is often better for thin corneas.

How much does LASIK cost in Newport Beach?

Your price depends on your prescription and is confirmed at your evaluation. You can lower it with the $500 coupon, an extra discount for booking by phone, and 0% CareCredit financing from $59 a month, subject to approval.

Do you see patients from outside Newport Beach?

Yes. Our office at 4740 Von Karman Ave. is close to the 405 and easy to reach from across Orange County, including Irvine, Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach.
